Team-teachers of "The Blenders," Lincoln's innovative first through fifth-grade class, Barbara Heyerman and Mark Sherbow bring a combined total of over 40 years experience in education. Barbara has lived and taught in Ashland since 1980. Mark has taught there for 15 years, plus he spent two years teaching in Park City, Utah and another year in Australia. Barbara is a native of near-by Medford. "Basically I've lived my whole life in Oregon with most of that time being right here in the Rogue Valley, she says." Barbara and her husband Robert have two grown children, Rylan, who just returned from the Peace Corps in Bolivia, and Opie, a student at the University of Oregon. Although Barbara has lived in the Rogue Valley most of her life, she loves traveling to foreign countries and backpacking in the wilderness. "When I'm backpacking or traveling I love to take the time to sketch and watercolor the places we are visiting," she says. "I remember more that way then when I just take a picture although pictures are great too." Mark and his wife Ute have a ten year old son, Toby. They all enjoy spending time outside, hiking, swimming "and, of course, skiing and running," says Mark. Mark has not missed a day of running in over 4000 days! What Mark and Barbara enjoy about Lincoln and the Blenders is the opportunity to work with great children, teachers and parents. When they embarked on teaching a class of six through eleven year olds, Mark and Barbara took the opportunity to articulate their personal beliefs about education: *All children want to learn. *Learning should be meaningful and relate to real-world problems. *The development level of the learner must be respected. * All students, teachers and parents can learn. * Focus on the strengths of the learners and work from there. * Teachers need to model their love of learning. * The goal of education is independence. * Learning is lifelong and requires thoughtfulness. * We need to have high expectations for ourselves and our students. |
